Market Daily Dose: Gold Reacts to US Orders Government Staff to Leave Saudi Arabia Amid Rising Regional Tensions

The US State Department ordered non-emergency US government employees and their family members to leave Saudi Arabia on 22 October, citing attacks by Iran-aligned Houthis on civilian targets and critical infrastructure, including airports. Reuters also reported that US missions in other Gulf states would withdraw family members, while a US military official reportedly indicated that the US had been quietly reducing its presence at regional posts. The announcement raised concerns over further escalation in the Middle East, although it remains unclear whether the move signals a worsening conflict or an effort to reduce US exposure to regional risks.

Following the headline, Gold initially declined 0.61% before recovering and subsequently giving back some of its gains on the 15-minute chart. Meanwhile, USOIL, US10Y Treasury Yields and the US Dollar Index (DXY) moved in the opposite direction to Gold during both legs of the price movement. The initial reaction suggests that markets interpreted the announcement as an escalation risk, potentially pushing oil prices and inflation expectations higher. This may have contributed to higher Treasury Yields and a stronger US Dollar, putting pressure on Gold despite the geopolitical uncertainty.

However, Gold’s subsequent recovery suggests that the market may have reassessed the implications of the announcement. One possible interpretation is that the withdrawal of diplomatic personnel and family members reflects an effort by the US to distance itself from the conflict, potentially reducing concerns over direct US involvement. If investors viewed the move as a signal of de-escalation rather than further military escalation, this could help explain Gold’s recovery.

This price action highlights how geopolitical uncertainty does not always translate into gains for Gold. While the precious metal can benefit from safe-haven demand during periods of heightened risk, rising oil prices can also reinforce inflation concerns and expectations for interest rates to remain elevated. Higher Treasury Yields increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as Gold, while a stronger US Dollar can create additional selling pressure. In this instance, the initial decline suggests that the rates, inflation and US Dollar channels may have outweighed safe-haven demand.

Going forward, markets will focus on further Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure, any potential US military response and statements from US officials regarding the country’s regional policy. These developments could help clarify whether the latest announcement signals further escalation or a potential reduction in US involvement. Until there is greater clarity, Gold may remain sensitive to shifts in geopolitical expectations, Treasury Yields and the US Dollar, highlighting the potential for continued two-way volatility.
